    HAUTE COUTURE EXPLAINED
    (by Timothy LongFiled)
    1. Haute couture is an essential part of the French economy with origins dating back to 1868. Literally meaning high sewing, haute couture refers to designers or “houses” that create exclusive and often trend setting fashions for women only. Prior to this, fashionable trends changed much more slowly and were often dictated by members of European court. Plus, those interested in wearing the latest trends were often much more involved in the overall creation of their clothes by either making their own clothing or working closely with a dressmaker who simply adhered to their clients’ wishes. Dressmakers were thought of as tradesmen, not arbiters of fashion.
    2. Charles Frederick Worth, an Englishman working in Paris in the mid to late 19th century, is considered the father of haute couture for being the first to present pre-made gowns that clients would chose from and then have made in their own size. This idea has grown into one of France's most profitable industries. Today, France understands the importance of the fashion industry to their overall economy and so the term haute couture has become a protected name governed by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Paris. Today the rules state that “those companies mentioned on the list drawn up each year by a commission domiciled at the Ministry for Industry are entitled to avail themselves” of the label haute couture. Once accepted into this exclusive club, each house must follow specific rules that include:
    • Design made-to-order clothing for private clients, with at least one fitting.
    • Have a workshop in Paris that employs at least fifteen full-time staff.
    • Twice a year present a collection to the Paris press of at least 35 ensembles.
с) Задайте три вопроса к тексту.
